Brand New Shoes

Hey, I put some new shoes on, and suddenly everything is right.
I said, hey, I put some new shoes on and everybody's smiling.
It's so inviting,
Oh, short on money, but long on time,
Slowly strolling in the sweet sunshine,
And I'm running late,
And I don't need an excuse,
'cause I'm wearing my brand new shoes.

Yeah, I've had "New Shoes" in my head for the past few days.  Why you ask?  Because after hemming and hawing over getting new sneakers/running shoes since LAST SUMMER, I finally did it.  And by me, I mean, my fabulous boyfriend bought them for me as an early birthday present.

I've needed new shoes for a long time now.  It's embarrassing to admit, but I've had the same sneakers since high school.  Yeah.  I haven't worn them all that time, in fact, I hardly ever wear sneakers, but still.  I actually bought three pair of the same New Balances in high school (different colors of course, black, pink and navy), and have just gone through one pair every few years.  Black survived high school and some of college, pink got tossed in grad school, and now navy is getting the old heave ho.  So what brand of shoe did I choose this time around? Grey New Balance.  Shocker.  But I LOVE them.

New shoes before their inaugural run!
I've taken a few pages from Cassie's book recently.  A few weeks ago Sakief encouraged me to start a couch to 5k program, but I shot him down; elliptical is just fine by me, and I don't really like to run.  But with Cassie getting inspired by her new shoes to start a C25k program, I decided to go for it.

And it's not so bad!  I did my first run on Saturday.  Each run is perfectly laid out for me, which makes it easy.  The first run is supposed to be 30 mins, and I was able to power through and run for 45.  Yesterday I did day 2 (and got to test out my new shoes!), but I stuck to the 30 mins.  I did run a little extra at the end of the workout before cooling down, but basically stuck to the program.  I felt great afterwards!  Now if I can only remind myself of that feeling when I try to talk myself out of running... I'd really like to stick to it.

Also, my new shoes felt really good on my feet, and I wasn't sore afterwards like I have been in the past.  I was waiting for some serious thigh pain this morning (you should have seen me hobble around on Sunday, but I think I might be able to blame that on drunk dancing in 4 inch heels all night), but nothing.  In fact, I may go for another run tonight.

  4. Hey Sarah,

Been following you on/off as you've posted updates on Facebook. Have you considered trying pole dance classes? Don't laugh - I started classes last year and am in the best shape of my life. As someone who normally HATES exercise, I'm finding pole to be both fun and an awesome full-body work out.

Plus being able to hang upside down by just one leg is pretty darn cool.

  5. May, I've seen all of your posts about pole dancing. It seems really fun. I'd be willing to try anything, so I guess it's something I should look into when I move!

  6. I've heard good things about Brass Ovaries in Austin TX: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFw-bwBmBBM

I like that they also have aerial hoops classes and I figure any pole studio that Pantera deigns to visit must be good :P

  7. Hey Sarah! Just saw your blog on FB. I started running to get out of a slump after Faye's birth with the help of "The Non-Runners Marathon Trainer." I laughed at the title because at the time I hardly left the couch with screaming Faye, let alone ran! I don't think I could do a mile without stopping at that time. Now this book is my bible and I try to run one marathon a year. What I love about it is the inspiration and the tools from the words of people who had every reason not to run in the first place and did it anyway. Even if you never run a marathon in your life, I highly highly highly recommend this book. It is a life changer. Not for the miles. 5K is a great goal in itself! But more for the way it got me from my safe spot on the couch to out the door and running. I started purely for weight loss efforts, and ended up loving running for it's own sake. I don't even WANT the headphones anymore - and I used to think loss of headphones was the end of a run. Here is the amazon link. http://www.amazon.com/Non-Runners-Marathon-Trainer-David-Whitsett/dp/1570281823 It was written by a woman in her 50's who described herself as having a lot of weight to lose. She didn't win the race, but the journey changed her life...and mine too :) (THey should pay me for all of the recommendations I give ;)
